What 5C / 5E / nd means
On Samsung washers with a digital display, front-load and top-load, 5C, 5E, nd, SE, SC and 1 5C all report a no drain error. Water is not leaving the washer at the correct speed, or not at all. Common causes are an unlevel washer, a kinked or blocked drain hose, or a clogged filter. You will see the code with water remaining in the tub and the cycle stalled.
Common causes of 5C / 5E / nd
- Washer not level
- Drain hose kinked, clogged or set too high
- Filter packed with lint or small items
- Drain pump slowed or blocked
- Household drain backing up
1. Turn the washer off and check that it sits level and does not rock. 2. Look at the drain hose for kinks and make sure it is not pushed too far into the standpipe. 3. Clean the drain filter if your washer has one at the front, with towels ready for water. 4. Check that the household drain runs freely. 5. Restart a drain or spin cycle.
- After the filter and hose are clear, we cannot tell whether the pump or its wiring is behind a slow drain.
- We run a drain test and check the household standpipe before recommending a part.
- You see the written price for any pump work before it starts, and the repair has a 30-day warranty.
Other Washer codes
Why does leveling matter for draining?
A washer that rocks or tilts can leave water pooled and trigger the code. Adjust the feet until it sits firm and level. Use a level on top of the washer, and tighten the lock nuts on the feet after you adjust them.
Is 5C the same as 5E?
They belong to one family on different models. We handle them the same way, starting with leveling, hose and filter. Letters are the only difference, and a photo of your display helps us confirm the family.
What if the household drain is slow?
Then the washer may be fine. A slow standpipe can look like a washer problem, so we check both. Running another drain in the house, such as a sink, shows whether the line is slow.
