What E-42 means
A shorted circuit on the easy or PH sensor is what E-42 reports on Samsung US microwaves. Where E-41 describes a break, this one means the control sees the circuit bridged, giving a reading no working sensor would give. Automatic cooking programs stop and the display holds the code until you reset the oven, so anything you wanted cooked on a one-touch program has to be done by timer for now.
Common causes of E-42
- The easy sensor circuit shorted at the sensor or its wiring
- Damaged insulation on the sensor wires
- Moisture bridging the sensor connection
1. Throw the breaker or unplug the oven. 2. Moisture gets time to dry before the next step. 3. Once 60 seconds have passed, restore power. 4. Start a short manual timed cook as a test. 5. If E-42 reappears, request service.
- A short may be inside the sensor or anywhere along its wiring, so each section is tested.
- We compare against E-41 behavior, since the two codes describe the same circuit in opposite states.
- The written price comes before we start, with a 30-day workmanship warranty on the repair.

How does E-42 differ from E-41?
E-41 says the easy sensor circuit is open and E-42 says it is shorted. They describe opposite conditions on the same circuit, and we test accordingly.
Is a shorted sensor dangerous?
The sensor circuit is low power and the code is not a hazard by itself, and the oven simply declines to run its automatic mode. Do not open the cabinet or the control area to look, and leave the checking to us.
Will a reset help?
Only if moisture caused it. If the code returns after drying and a 60-second wait, the cause is in the circuit and not in how you used the oven.
