What E-81 means

Inside a Samsung US microwave, the display or keypad board talks to the main control. E-81 reports a communication open error, so the link between them reads as broken. You might find a display that freezes or goes blank, keypad presses that do nothing, or a code that appears as soon as the oven gets power, which can look like a dead oven.

Common causes of E-81

  • The link between the keypad board and the control reading as open
  • A loose ribbon or connector between boards
  • Moisture that reached the keypad or control
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Disconnect the oven at the outlet or the breaker. 2. Should moisture have got in, let it dry fully. 3. Wait 60 seconds and power on. 4. Press Stop/Clear and see whether the display responds. 5. A returning E-81 means you should request service.

! Why to stop there
  • Open means the signal does not get through, but the break could be a connector, a cable or a board.
  • Boards in a microwave need a careful, safe test and should not be handled by owners.
  • We state the price in writing before work.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
E-81E-81 questions
What is being communicated?

The keypad and display board sends your presses to the main control, which sends back what to show. The code says that link is open, so neither side hears the other.

Why would a keypad stop working?

If the link breaks, presses never reach the control, so the oven seems dead. That is often what E-81 looks like in daily use, even when the oven's heating parts are fine.

Will a reset fix it?

It can if moisture or a brief glitch caused it. A code that returns right away at power-up needs a check, since a reset cannot repair a link that is truly open.
