What E-72 means
A shorted steam sensor circuit is what E-72 reports on Samsung US microwaves. Where E-71 is a break, here the control sees the circuit bridged and cannot trust the steam reading. The steam programs stop and the display shows the code until the oven is reset, though ordinary timed cooking may be unaffected. It is worth noting when the code first appeared, as that helps us.
Common causes of E-72
- The steam sensor circuit shorting at the sensor or in its wiring
- Moisture or residue across the sensor contacts
- Insulation damage on the sensor wires
1. Breaker off, or pull the plug. 2. A wet oven should dry before you go further. 3. Count 60 seconds and then restore power. 4. Run a short timed cook as a test. 5. If E-72 returns, request service.
- A short may be in the sensor or anywhere along its wires, so each stretch is tested.
- We keep E-71 and E-72 apart, because an open and a short lead to different checks.
- Price in writing first.
Other Microwave codes
Is E-72 worse than E-71?
Neither is worse. E-71 is a break and E-72 is a short on the same circuit, and each one has its own test that we run with the oven out of use.
Could food residue cause this?
Spatter near the sensor can build up and bridge its contacts. Wiping the inside of the cavity, with the oven off and unplugged, is a fair first step before you call anyone.
Should I stop using the steam programs?
Yes, until we check the circuit. Timed cooking is a practical substitute in the meantime, and it does not need the steam sensor at all.
Still seeing E-72?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
