What HC / HE / Hr means
Samsung washers with a digital display, front-load and top-load, show HC, HE, HE1, or Hr when the control reports a heater problem. Models such as the WF45M5500A and WD53DBA900H show HC and HC1. The service tables describe the washing heater as shorted, open, or giving a bad sensor reading, and overheat protection can also trip if the heater ran without enough water. The cycle stops with the code showing.
Common causes of HC / HE / Hr
- Heater element and its wiring
- Heater temperature sensor reading
- Water level sensing during heating
- Main board heater output
1. Turn the washer off and wait a few minutes. 2. Turn it on and restart the cycle. 3. Check that the water supply valves are fully open so the tub can fill. 4. If HC or HE returns, schedule a visit and avoid running hot cycles.
- A restart cannot tell us whether the heater, its sensor, or the water level reading is involved.
- We test the heater and its sensor and check whether the tub fills fully before heating.
- You see the written price before any heater or board is replaced.
Other Washer codes
Does HC differ from HE?
Both belong to the heater error group, and HE1 and Hr are close variants. The exact characters on your display help us pick the right test.
Can low water cause a heater code?
Yes. If the heater runs without enough water, overheat protection can trip. Check that the supply valves are open and the water fills before starting again.
Can I wash cold while waiting for service?
The code stops the cycle, so the washer may not run at all. We can tell you more after checking the heater circuit. Leaving it idle until we look is safer than repeated attempts.
Still seeing HC / HE / Hr?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
