When a washer powers on but refuses to begin, it is usually waiting for a condition to be met. The door being locked is the most common one, and the others are a power event, a child lock or a paused cycle.
Try these in order
- Press the door firmly until you hear it latch, then press Start again.
- Check that nothing is caught in the gasket: a sock, a bra wire or a drawstring.
- See whether a lock icon is lit on the panel. Hold the child lock buttons shown in the manual to release it.
- Unplug the washer for a few minutes and restore power. This clears a stuck control state, though it will not fix a failed part.
- Confirm the breaker has held and the outlet is live.
What the behavior suggests
- No click at all when you shut the door suggests the latch or its wiring.
- A click, then nothing, suggests the control waits for a signal it is not getting.
- A washer that starts, then stops with a locked door, may have a water or balance condition to resolve first.
If the door will not open
A washer with water in the drum keeps the door locked. Do not force the handle. Turn the power off and wait, then use the drain option or the drain filter to empty the water. Opening the door by force can break the latch and flood the floor.
What cannot be concluded
A worn latch and a damaged control look the same from the front panel. Both give a closed door that the washer does not accept, and only a test at the latch can separate them.
A washer that still refuses to start or unlock can be tested at the latch and control. Ask for a visit on the washer repair page. We cover the counties on our service map, and you will see the cost in writing before we begin; the repair has a 30-day warranty.
