What 21E means
21E on Samsung refrigerators in the US with a numeric or alphanumeric display is a freezer fan error. The electronics are not sensing rotation feedback from the fan when it should be turning. Most often the fan is frozen up, for instance after a door was left open or a gasket gap let in humid air, though a fan motor that no longer runs is also possible. The owner sees 21E, and the freezer may warm up while the fresh food section slowly follows.
Common causes of 21E
- Fan blocked by frost or ice build-up
- Door left open or a gasket gap that let in humid air
- Fan motor not turning or not reporting rotation
- Wiring or connector between the fan and the control
1. Do not unplug the refrigerator and do not press on the panel to try to clear the code. 2. Check that the doors close fully and that nothing, such as a tray or a packed shelf, keeps them from sealing. 3. Look along the gaskets to see that they seal all the way around. 4. You can choose to defrost the unit, which sometimes frees a frozen fan. 5. Keep food cold in the meantime.
- If 21E returns after a defrost, we test whether the fan turns and whether it reports rotation
- We check for an ice build-up cause, such as a gasket or door alignment problem, so the repair lasts
- We give you the cost in writing before we start, and our workmanship is warranted for 30 days
Other Refrigerator codes
Should I unplug the fridge when 21E shows?
No. Leave it plugged in and do not press on the panel to clear the code. You may defrost the unit as an option, but do not pack it so full that the doors cannot close.
Why would the freezer fan freeze up?
Warm humid air from a door left open or a gasket that does not seal can leave frost on the fan. Once it is frozen, it cannot turn, and the control reports 21E.
Is my food at risk with 21E?
If the freezer fan stops, temperatures can rise over time. Check the food regularly and move perishables to a cooler if the freezer feels warm.
Still seeing 21E?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
