What u (underlined) means

On Samsung induction cooktops in the US, an underlined u is a pan detection error. The cooktop does not recognize the cookware because of its size, material or position on the element. The pan will not heat, and the element turns itself off after 1 minute. The owner sees the underlined u on the display near the element. It is not a breakdown of the cooktop, and it is usually cleared by using suitable cookware that is placed correctly.

Common causes of u (underlined)

  • Pan too small for the element
  • Cookware material that does not work with induction
  • Pan not centered on the element
  • Pan base not flat or not making full contact

1. Remove the pan and check that it is made for induction cooking. 2. Use cookware that fits the size of the element. 3. Center the pan on the element so the base sits flat. 4. Turn the element on again. 5. Keep the glass surface clean and dry under the pan.

Why does my pan not heat on the induction cooktop?

The cooktop could not detect it. A pan that is too small, made of the wrong material or off center will show the underlined u and the element will switch off after a minute.

How do I know if my pan works with induction?

The pan needs a base that the cooktop can sense. If it was not designed for induction, it may not heat. Try another suitable pan on the same element to compare.

Does one pan failing mean the cooktop is bad?

Not by itself. If a suitable pan works on other elements but not this one, the element's sensing is what we would test, with a written price first.
