What tESt / tE5t means
On Samsung ranges and wall ovens in the US, tESt or tE5t means the range is in Demo mode. In this mode the oven and cooktop will not heat, although gas cooktops will still ignite. The owner sees tESt or tE5t on the display and wonders why nothing gets hot. The range is not broken. It was set into a display setting, which is common on showroom units or after a button was held or a menu was changed by accident.
Common causes of tESt / tE5t
- Demo mode turned on in the control settings
- Range that came from a showroom floor
- Settings changed by holding a key or choosing a menu item
- Control that has not been taken out of Demo mode
1. Open your user manual and find the section on turning Demo mode off. 2. Follow those steps exactly for your model. 3. Once Demo mode is off, run a normal preheat to check that the oven heats. 4. On a gas range, remember that the burners can still ignite while Demo mode is on, so keep that in mind around the cooktop.
- If the oven still does not heat after Demo mode is off, we test the heating circuit
- We check the control settings and the oven's heating response step by step

Why won't my oven heat when it says tESt?
Demo mode shuts off oven and cooktop heating on purpose so a showroom range can show its display safely. Turn Demo mode off using your manual, and normal heating returns.
Is it safe that gas burners still ignite in Demo mode?
They still light, so treat the cooktop as live. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside. Please do not guess at button sequences.
What if I cannot find the Demo mode steps?
They are model specific and are in your user manual. If the steps do not clear the message, we can help turn it off, and we quote in writing before any work.
Still unsure about tESt / tE5t?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
