What E-12 means

A Samsung US microwave showing E-12 is reporting a short gas sensor error. The gas sensor is the part of the sensor cooking system that reads vapor from the food, and short means the control sees that circuit as bridged or shorted instead of reading a normal signal. You will notice the code on the display and sensor cooking modes that will not run.

Common causes of E-12

  • The sensor circuit shorting to itself or to another wire
  • Moisture creating a path across the sensor connections
  • Wiring near the sensor that is pinched or damaged
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn the breaker off, or unplug the oven. 2. Anything wet inside gets time to dry before you go further. 3. Count 60 seconds, then bring the power back. 4. Check that a manual timed cook still heats a cup of water. 5. Another E-12 after that is the signal to request service.

! Why to stop there
  • A short can come from the sensor, its wiring or the control input, and the code does not say which one.
  • Damp conditions can mimic a short, so we check for moisture before blaming a part.
  • Any repair is priced in writing first and covered by our 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
E-12E-12 questions
How is E-12 different from E-11?

E-11 reports an open sensor circuit and E-12 a shorted one. Both involve the same vapor sensor, but they describe opposite electrical conditions, so the checks differ even though your first steps are the same.

Can steam trigger a short reading?

Moisture across sensor connections can look like a short to the control. That is why we have you dry the oven out first. If the code survives a dry oven, we look at wiring and the sensor.

Is it dangerous to use the oven?

The code does not signal a safety hazard by itself. Still, do not keep running an oven that shows an error on every start. Switch it off and have it looked at.
