What does the fan do in a dishwasher?

It moves air to help dry the dishes. If it cannot reach speed, the control reports FC and the drying stage suffers. On your model it also sits in the same airflow path as the vent.

Can I use the dishwasher with FC?

Washing may still work, but drying may be poor. Air drying with the door cracked is a stopgap until we check it. Leave the door open afterward so moisture can escape.

Is a slow fan a safety risk?

Not usually, but a struggling motor can run hot over time, so it is worth having it looked at before it fails completely. A motor that struggles at one stage can trip the same check again later.
