A Samsung washer that shakes hard on the spin is first a balance problem, and in most homes the answer is one of three things: the load, the level or the shipping hardware. Only after those are cleared does it make sense to look at the suspension inside.
Start with the easy causes
- The load. One heavy item, like a wet bath mat or a single comforter, can pull the drum off balance. Mix sizes and avoid washing one bulky piece alone.
- The level. Press diagonally on opposite top corners. If the washer rocks, adjust the feet and tighten the lock nuts against the cabinet.
- The floor. A slab with a slope, or a raised platform that flexes, will make even a level washer shudder. Houston homes with wood subfloors upstairs show this more than slab-on-grade ones.
- Transit bolts. On a newly delivered or relocated washer, make sure the shipping bolts at the rear are out.
When the problem is inside the machine
If the washer is level, the floor is solid and small loads still make it pound, worn shock absorbers or suspension rods may be involved. A grinding or rumbling sound that rises with drum speed can also come from worn bearings. Those look like a shaking washer from the outside, but a bearing needs the drum assembly opened to confirm, and we would not call it from the shaking alone.
A caution
Do not keep running a washer that hits the wall or tilts the cabinet. The cabinet can scuff, hoses can be pulled loose, and a hose that slips at the tap floods quickly. Pull the plug and close the taps if you see movement beyond a small shimmy.
