What HC means
On Samsung US dishwashers with a digital display, HC reports a high temperature heater error: the temperature inside the dishwasher is too hot. On the DW80T5040US the control reaches that conclusion when it reads 80 C or higher for 3 seconds. The control stops the cycle and shows HC. You may feel heat from the door, and dishes can come out too hot to handle or the cycle may end early.
Common causes of HC
- The temperature reading inside the tub
- The heater staying on when it should switch off
- Whether the code returns after a cool-down
- Water level too low during heating
1. Switch the breaker off for 30 seconds, then back on. 2. Empty the dishwasher and let it cool. 3. Make sure the detergent drawer is filled. 4. Run a Normal cycle. 5. If HC returns, stop using the dishwasher and call us.
- A cool-down does not show whether the heater stays on or the temperature reading is wrong.
- We test the heating circuit and the sensing together.
- You see the price in writing before work, and the repair is warranted for 30 days.

Is HC dangerous?
An overheating tub deserves respect, so stop the cycle and let it cool. The control shuts the cycle down to protect the machine and your dishes.
What separates HC from HE?
HC says the temperature is too high. HE says the temperature is being read incorrectly. We test the sensing and the heater for both. Both look similar on the panel, but they point to different readings.
Can I reset it myself?
A 30-second breaker reset is worth one try. If HC comes straight back, do not keep running it. Let the tub cool first, and never open the door mid-cycle to feel the heat.
Still seeing HC?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
