What E-36 means

E-36 is a door open error on Samsung US microwaves: the control read the door as open, or as changing state, at a moment when it should have been closed. That can happen if the door is not latched, or if the door switches report something different from what the control expects. The oven will not run while the code is present.

Common causes of E-36

  • A door that is not fully latched
  • Food residue or an object keeping the door from seating
  • Door switch circuitry reporting an inconsistent state
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Wipe the door edge and the frame where it seals, and make sure nothing blocks the latch. 2. Close the door firmly until it clicks. 3. Remove power at the plug or breaker and let any moisture dry. 4. Allow a minute, then switch it on. 5. Request service if E-36 stays.

! Why to stop there
  • A closed door that still reads open points to the switches or their wiring, and we cannot see that from outside.
  • Door switches are part of the oven's safety chain, so they get tested properly, not bypassed.
  • We state the price in writing before any work.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
E-36E-36 questions
Why does a latched door still show E-36?

The control compares what the door switches report. If they disagree, or if one reports open, it flags E-36 even though the door looks shut.

Can I hold the door shut to run it?

No. The door switches are safety devices, and working around them with pressure or tape is unsafe. Leave the oven off until it is checked.

What about a bent door?

A door that is bent, loose or out of line can fail to seat. If it looks damaged or does not close easily, mention that when you call.
