What HC / hE / HC4 means
On Samsung dryers with a digital display, including the DV45H series that shows HE, these codes are heating errors. The dryer is getting too hot, and a clogged lint screen or vent is the most common reason. On electric dryers it can also appear when the heater is not hot enough because the voltage is low. The DV45H lists HE as an invalid heating temperature while running. You will see HC, hE, or HC4 and the cycle will stop.
Common causes of HC / hE / HC4
- A lint screen or exhaust vent that is clogged
- Low supply voltage on an electric dryer
- A temperature sensing circuit reading incorrectly
- A heating element or control not working as it should
1. Turn the dryer off and let it cool down. 2. Clean the lint screen and the slot it sits in. 3. Check the vent hose behind the dryer for kinks, and clear the outside vent hood. 4. For an electric dryer, have an electrician check the voltage at the outlet. 5. Run a cycle. If the code returns, stop using the dryer.
- A clean vent that still gives a heating code tells us the sensing or the heater side needs a test.
- We check airflow, then the temperature sensing and heating circuit.
- We give you a written price before work, with a 30-day workmanship warranty.

What does HE mean on a Samsung dryer?
On the DV45H series, HE is an invalid heating temperature while the dryer is running. It belongs to the same heating group as HC and HC4, so the vent and lint checks come first.
Why would an electric dryer show a heating code when it is not too hot?
Low voltage can keep the heater from reaching the right temperature, and that also triggers the code. An electrician can check the supply at the outlet before anyone replaces a part.
Is it safe to keep using the dryer with HC?
Clean the lint screen and vent first. If the code returns, stop using the dryer, because restricted airflow and a dryer that overheats are a fire concern and need an inspection.
