A refrigerator works by moving heat out of the cabinet, and anything that blocks that heat or leaks warm air in makes it run longer. Three spots deserve attention twice a year, and each takes only a few minutes.
The condenser area
Heat leaves through the condenser, which on many Samsung models sits behind a lower grille or on the back. Pull the unit out slightly, unplug it, and vacuum the grille and the visible fins with a soft brush. Pet hair and kitchen dust are the usual blockage. Skip any step that needs you to remove screws if you are unsure; the fins bend easily.
The door gaskets
Clean the rubber seals using a mild soap solution, then towel them dry. Sticky spills make the gasket grab and tear when the door opens. A quick test: shut the door on a strip of paper. If it slides out freely at any spot, the seal there is not holding, and the gasket may be warped or the door out of line.
The defrost drain
- In the freezer, melted frost drains to a small channel at the back, and in the refrigerator side a drain hole near the rear wall carries condensation away.
- If you see water pooling on the shelf or under the crisper, or a trickle that freezes at the back, the drain may be blocked by food debris or ice.
- Clear it gently with warm water, not a sharp tool.
Other habits
Keep a few inches of air space behind and above the refrigerator, and avoid placing it in direct afternoon sun. Check the water filter on the schedule shown on your model’s display. These habits do not prevent every repair, but they remove the common causes that look like a breakdown.
