Samsung Freezer Running Constantly: Normal Cycling or a Warning Sign

A freezer that never seems to shut off can be working hard for a good reason or a bad one. Learn what to look at to tell a busy freezer from a struggling one.

A freezer that runs a lot is not automatically broken. After a door has been open, after a large grocery load, or on a hot Houston afternoon, the compressor runs longer to catch up. The question is whether it ever rests.

Reasons it runs longer than usual

  • A full load of warm food added at once.
  • A door that is not closing fully, or a gasket that leaks.
  • A hot location, such as a garage in summer or a spot next to a wall oven.
  • Dust on the condenser, which keeps heat from leaving.

Simple things to try

  1. Close the door and check that nothing is blocking it.
  2. Look at the gasket for gaps or tears.
  3. Vacuum the condenser grille, unplugged.
  4. Set the temperature to the recommended level, not colder.
  5. Leave it alone for a day and listen for the cycle to end.

Signs that suggest something is wrong

  • The compressor runs nonstop for a full day and the contents feel soft.
  • Frost builds up on the back wall or around the door.
  • The cabinet sides feel hot to the touch.
  • The freezer is noisy with a clicking or a loud fan.

What cannot be concluded

Constant running could come from a failing fan, a refrigerant problem, a defrost issue or just heat load. We would not guess from the sound alone. If the contents are thawing, move them to another freezer or a cooler while we check the unit.

If the freezer never rests or the contents soften, ask for a visit on the freezer repair page. We come to homes within the area we serve, share the price in writing up front, and cover our labor with a 30-day warranty.

Tell us the model and the code. We will bring the part.
