A freezer that runs a lot is not automatically broken. After a door has been open, after a large grocery load, or on a hot Houston afternoon, the compressor runs longer to catch up. The question is whether it ever rests.
Reasons it runs longer than usual
- A full load of warm food added at once.
- A door that is not closing fully, or a gasket that leaks.
- A hot location, such as a garage in summer or a spot next to a wall oven.
- Dust on the condenser, which keeps heat from leaving.
Simple things to try
- Close the door and check that nothing is blocking it.
- Look at the gasket for gaps or tears.
- Vacuum the condenser grille, unplugged.
- Set the temperature to the recommended level, not colder.
- Leave it alone for a day and listen for the cycle to end.
Signs that suggest something is wrong
- The compressor runs nonstop for a full day and the contents feel soft.
- Frost builds up on the back wall or around the door.
- The cabinet sides feel hot to the touch.
- The freezer is noisy with a clicking or a loud fan.
What cannot be concluded
Constant running could come from a failing fan, a refrigerant problem, a defrost issue or just heat load. We would not guess from the sound alone. If the contents are thawing, move them to another freezer or a cooler while we check the unit.
If the freezer never rests or the contents soften, ask for a visit on the freezer repair page. We come to homes within the area we serve, share the price in writing up front, and cover our labor with a 30-day warranty.
